Hester Peirce Bio
Hester Peirce, known as the “Crypto Mom” for her pro-cryptocurrency and blockchain stance, was sworn in as Commissioner of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on January 11, 2018, appointed by former President Donald Trump.
Before her appointment, Peirce honed her expertise in financial market regulation as a researcher at the Mercatus Center at George Mason University. She also served as a Senior Counsel on the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs, providing securities-related advice to Ranking Member Richard Shelby and other members. Peirce’s extensive experience includes her role as counsel to SEC Commissioner Paul S. Atkins and as a Staff Attorney in the SEC’s Division of Investment Management.
Peirce’s professional background also includes time as an associate at Wilmer, Cutler & Pickering (now WilmerHale) and as a clerk for Judge Roger Andewelt on the Court of Federal Claims.
The Commissioner holds a bachelor’s degree in Economics from Case Western Reserve University and a JD from Yale Law School.
